I bought a bottle of Sicilian olive oil today at Homegoods. It wasn’t labeled “Sicilian Olive Oil” on the front. But on the back of the bottle, I noticed that it was bottled in Custonaci TP. I recognized TP as an abbreviation for Trapani, the town of my father’s birth. It was a good buy for a liter bottle. I brought the bottle to check out. It was hot in the store and the line was long. I mentioned to the Asian and Hispanic women who were ringing up my purchase that Sicilian olive oil was some of the best in the world. They replied “Oh, really?” I then told them that when we were in Trapani on a visit to the siren isle, I had never seen so many banks in a small town. I then said that the Mafia is quite strong in that part of the island. They smiled and said “Oh!”.
