Google Image Search

I’m a somewhat lazy person. But where credit is due, I give credit. So to save some future key strokes, I want say that Rob “Letter’s From New Orleans” Walker, which you should read if you haven’t, created the concept of searching images through Google. He then places the search results of an entry on the web, on postcards, bumper stickers, port-o-sans, selected livestock in the mid West, noses of airbus’s, on arcane holographic grooves of vinyl albums of obscure bands etc. Anyhoo, I just wanted to give him proper credit here and so now you know the deal. I copied his idea and it’s fun. Check out his PerGoogle Tumblr and buy his book. He lives in Savannah and we all know how expensive those espressos are down there.

Google Image Search “Occupy”

Google Image Search “Occupy”

This is one page of what typing in “Escher” yields from Google image search. Rob Walker on his pergoogle.tumblr has been doing this for a while with some very interesting results. He is even making postcards from them. He didn’t write “Consumed” for nothing. Iconic images through the Google prism/algorithm, i.e. per Google. Pastiches of remixes of images of images.

Who would be the owner, the artist, the author of these Pergoogles (or whatever they are)? They encompass original works, remix spinoffs, spoofs, maybe even unrelated keyword-driven imagery. Is it an involuntary collaboration among all of the above? Or is Google the artist, creating bricolage with its algorithm?
